Health, Physical Education and Recreation
Physical Education and Health are important parts of the total educational program. Students participate in physical activities that allow them to develop an understanding of the physical abilities of themselves and others. The mental and emotional benefits of physical activity become evident when an active role in physical activity is encouraged. A variety of activities are incorporated into the physical education program and include team sports individual sports, yoga, dance, and adventure courses. Health classes are designed to promote student learning with regard to health issues that affect their immediate and long-term health. Health education provides students with knowledge of skills necessary to confront health related issues.

Department: Health, Physical Education and Recreation
This course will be a mixture of individual and team activities. The main emphasis throughout the course will be physical fitness. An extensive unit on Physical Fitness will be conducted. The components of physical fitness, how to achieve physical fitness, values of fitness and involvement in activities to enhance all areas of physical fitness will be presented. Students will be tested for physical fitness using the State of Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment. The Health section of this course is planned to help students in developing interpersonal relations and realistic attitudes toward self and society as they meet the changes and challenges of maturing in high school. Time is devoted to the following topics: Mental Health and Stress, Sexuality, Growth and Development, Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco, STD’s and AIDS, Community and Consumer Health, and Environmental Health. This is a comprehensive Health course which includes: writing activities, group activities, quizzes, and an oral report.
