Katie graduated from Columbia University School of Social Work in 2002. During her second year, she had a clinical internship at a mental health clinic in lower Manhattan. She began her placement shortly before the catastrophic events of September 11th. During this time, she had the opportunity to work with a highly diverse client population, representing a wide range of ages and presenting problems. Most notably, she had the privilege of working with families and adolescents living at and around ground zero. This experience was life changing for Katie. She quickly learned the importance of being creative and flexible with this population. Through her work at this time, Katie was able to effectively engage the adolescent and start from their level of understanding and appreciation of their situation. Her passion for working with adolescents had been ignited and she continued to work towards increasing awareness of the importance of mental health in children and young people.
After graduation, Katie had the opportunity to use her psychotherapy skills abroad. She moved to London, England and began working in a child and adolescent clinical psychology department within the National Health Service. Here she provided psychotherapy to children, adolescents and families utilizing principles of family therapy, solution focused brief therapy, psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. She was responsible for delivering workshops and running groups for parents of young people. To better serve the client population, she took part in group training courses for family therapy, SFBT and CBT. She worked for the department for three years.
In 2019 she took a position as a school counselor at an organization in the UK called Place2B, a children and young people’s mental health charity providing counseling, mental health support and training in UK schools. She was responsible for providing individual counseling and support to vulnerable children within a school setting. She ran weekly Place2Talk group sessions within a solution focused brief therapy model. She also wrote reports on clinical cases and EHCP assessments. She was with Place2Be for 2 years.
In 2021 Katie returned to the United States after 18 years in London. She is excited to finally be able to start this new chapter of her life and is excited to become part of The Grove School Community!
Katie recently added a new addition to her family, as they welcomed a beautiful 12- week- old English cream golden retriever into their home, who keeps everyone on their toes, especially with stealing socks! In Katie’s free time she enjoys long walks along the beach and spending time with her kids.
