The Social Studies Department at Grove School is committed to helping students develop a civic responsibility as well as a cultural appreciation. Social Studies classes cover a variety of topics in US History, Global Studies, Cultural and Social Issues. The department promotes critical thinking through analysis of primary sources and develops students’ ability to formulate and support positions on historical and current topics.

This course will cover Early Man up to the Renaissance with the goal to create a better understanding of World History beyond the scope of the Eurocentric perspective. Topics to be covered consist of Early Man, Rise of Civilizations (Indus River Valley, Mesopotamia, and Egypt), Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Early African Civilizations, Ancient China, Ancient Japan, The Mongol Empire, and the Dark and Middle Ages in Europe. Within each topic we will focus on studying primary documents, secondary sources, literature, artifacts, art, and video material to study the various societies mentioned above.
