This course will give a general overview of science. It will cover such topics as chemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy, life science, electricity and magnetism. The primary goal of this class is for the students to gain an understanding of the scientific process. The student will also learn how to apply this process in practical situations.

The introductory economics course is to teach the fundamental concepts of macro and micro economics.  This course will cover supply and demand, labor, personal finance, financial institutions, business structure, and the role of the government in the economy and the different economic systems of the world. The student will look at problems and issues facing individual, national and world economies.

Exploring Language begins to prepare students for post-high school future through foundational English language study and exploratory experiences in literature.  In the first semester, the basic skills of grammar and mechanics are reviewed and mastered along with regular vocabulary instruction.  The second semester focuses on reading comprehension strategies, literature-based vocabulary study and the five paragraph essay and writing process.

The middle school runs as a 6-8^th grade inclusive looping team. Coursework is modified to the ability of the students in the class. Students are supported with a special educator, teacher aides and small class sizes. Reading and writing skills are the focus and become more complex as students become more independent throughout the year. In language arts, students will become familiar with the writing process.   Students will develop their oral language, grammar, listening, study, dictionary, and reading and comprehension skills. Students will use a critical eye to evaluate literature and their own writing. While reading and writing, they will focus on terminology, criticism, intent and style/technique.   Thematic units are used throughout the year to integrate skills or subject areas.

An exciting new class in which students learn the fundamentals of actually making a movie themselves. They will learn how to use equipment, how to tell stories using just visuals, and how to budget, schedule, and edit projects of their own creation. Similar to a freshmen level college course, students will be dropped into the proverbial fire and required to create stories with purposefully limited resources and little time.

Film Studies is a survey course where students view films spanning from the late 1930s through the present day.  Student will discuss each film’s significance from a film standpoint and why it is historically significant.  Students will also have written assignments for the class.  These written assignments will ask students to critique certain films the class has viewed and to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the film being reviewed.  Film Studies is a half-year course.

This course would include an emphasis on film criticism, theory, and aesthetics. The class will have a broad appeal so that students with a wide range of interests an aspirations can take this class as an elective while learning about the basics of creating art for a visual medium. Students will be introduced to specific genres, directors and styles. Students will also be encouraged to develop an understanding of film criticism so that they themselves can articulate an understanding of a film’s themes.
