Grove School Celebrates 29 Graduates in Heartfelt 2025 Ceremony
August 17, 2025 marked a milestone day as the Grove School community gathered to honor 29 graduating students in a deeply personal and moving ceremony.
Families, friends, and the entire Grove School community came together on August 17th to celebrate the remarkable achievements of 29 graduating seniors. The 2025 graduation ceremony embodied the school’s nearly 92-year tradition of honoring not just academic accomplishment, but personal growth, resilience, and the transformative power of relationships.
A Legacy of Connection
Executive Director Peter Chorney opened the ceremony by sharing a poignant discovery that captured Grove’s enduring mission. A relative of a 1949 Grove graduate had recently sent him materials from that graduation—76 years ago—including a valedictory speech remarkably similar to those heard today. The 1949 graduate, Arnold L. Aronson, spoke of Grove as his second home, his growth and maturity, and the key relationships that paved his way forward—themes that resonated throughout the 2025 ceremony.
While Grove has grown from two graduates in 1949 to 29 today, the core mission remains unchanged: creating a close-knit community where young people work on themselves and emerge as stronger, more functional human beings through meaningful connections.
Beyond Traditional Achievement
What sets Grove’s graduation apart is its recognition that these students have accomplished something far more complex than traditional academic achievement. As Chorney noted, “For our students, all of them have also worked hard to contend with emotional difficulties” alongside their academic work.
This deeper journey was evident in every student speech. One graduate reflected on their transformation: “My bed and my room represented all that I could not face. Now I know that safety is what you make it. Safety is not formed in stagnation; safety is formed in joy.” Another shared wisdom about overcoming challenges: “Dreams without goals are just dreams and ultimately they fuel disappointment. But dreams WITH goals turn into plans and ultimately they fuel success.”
Relationships at the Heart
True to Grove’s tradition, each graduate chose a staff member to introduce them before delivering their own speech—a powerful symbol of the mentoring relationships that define the Grove experience. Students’ gratitude was profound: one thanked their “Grove moms” for making their dorm “feel like home,” while another credited their advisor as “the most influential person to my treatment journey.”
The ceremony also celebrated family partnerships, with students consistently recognizing their families’ crucial support. One graduate thanked parents “for loving me enough to do what would help me the most to succeed,” while another shared how their relationship with their mother transformed: “Now, whenever I am asked who my best friend is, I answer ‘my mom’ with no hesitation.”
Diverse Paths Forward
The graduating class represents remarkable diversity in background and future plans. Drawing students from across the nation—from California and Washington State to Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Illinois—Grove’s reach extends far beyond its Connecticut campus. These 29 graduates are heading to institutions including Chapman University, University of Illinois, UMass Amherst, Stonehill College, Hood College, Broward College, University of New Haven, Dean College, Curry College, Berklee College of Music, and Quinnipiac University.
One graduate captured the spirit of perseverance that defines Grove’s approach: “I deeply believe that anyone can beat an addiction, but only if they truly want to. You need to put your mind to it and do what is logical. Don’t give yourself the short end of the stick just because it is easier or more comfortable.” This student’s emphasis on personal responsibility and the power of choice reflects the maturity and self-awareness that Grove students develop, preparing them not just for college but for life’s challenges ahead.
Embracing Imperfection
Perhaps most striking was the students’ mature perspective on growth and imperfection. One graduate’s senior quote from East of Eden captured this beautifully: “And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.” They explained, “I now realize that my greatest potential lies in embracing imperfection.”
As the ceremony concluded with diploma presentations, it was clear that Grove’s 2025 graduation celebrated more than individual achievement—it honored the power of community, the courage required for personal growth, and the transformative impact of authentic relationships. The 29 graduates join a legacy spanning nearly nine decades, carrying forward Grove’s mission of nurturing young people not just academically, but emotionally and socially, equipped with tools for resilience and the confidence that comes from having faced challenges and emerged stronger.
