Sean Kursawe

Sean has spent over twenty years at Grove and currently serves as Principal, bringing a deep commitment to helping students move from uncertainty toward confidence and achievement. Since joining in 2001, he has served in nearly every instructional and leadership role on campus—Social Studies Teacher, Residential Administrator, Mentor Teacher, Assistant Principal, and now Principal—giving him a comprehensive understanding of Grove’s academic, clinical, and residential programs.

Sean’s commitment to education took shape while tutoring in the Hartford school system during college. He earned his Bachelor’s in Secondary Education and Social Studies from the University of Hartford and his Master’s in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University, where he also completed certification in Educational Leadership. He holds Connecticut teaching certifications in History/Social Studies and Special Education, as well as Intermediate Administrator Certification.

In his role as Principal, Sean maintains regular communication and collaborative partnerships with public school special education directors and district leaders to support effective placement, service alignment, and successful student transitions. He plays a key role in strengthening professional practice, mentoring educators, and ensuring schoolwide systems effectively support student access, accommodations, and success. He also mentors educators and serves as Grove’s College Board SSD (Services for Students with Disabilities) Coordinator.

Sean takes a student-centered approach to leadership, staying closely connected to students through his work as Student Advisor and Academic Case Manager. He has coached students, led school trips to England, St. John, and San Diego, and values the relationships and experiences that happen beyond the classroom as much as the academic work within it.

A Connecticut native, Sean lives in Durham with his wife and two sons. His older son is in college, and his younger son is an accomplished athlete heading to college next year. The family is active in scouting together. Sean enjoys coaching, hiking, camping, and spending time outdoors with his family.
